In the early morning Thursday social media buzzed with outrage over the vandalism of a public art installation along Asbury Park’s boardwalk. The pop art mural shown above was splattered sometime during the overnight with hues of green paint and tagged with white spray painted letters. But shortly thereafter someone left an anonymous, three-page, handwritten. Asbury Underground is a major festival held in the downtown business district of Asbury Park every October and January. The Underground is an art and music “crawl” that includes some 30 venues hosting over 100 shows featuring performances by singer-songwriters, spoken word artists and comics.
At this point I’m sure everyone has seen the new art installation in the casino. It’s absolutely beautiful, and another great addition to our City By The Sea curated by Jenn Hampton and the Wooden Walls Project. The brilliant artist is HOTTEA, who is actually Eric Rieger, originally a street artist from Minneapolis. The title of this masterpiece is “One Last Moment Under The Sky.”
If you haven’t seen it, check it out in the Casino building the next time you’re in Asbury Park and watch it come to life on a windy day. For more of this artists work you can find him on Instagram @hotxtea.
